Nautical Discoveries in a Southampton Home

Scott Currie Southamtpon Hom
This is Scott Currie's Southampton home. He is the captain of the Elie Tahari fashion label and he is also a man with a passion for everything nautical-sailor.

nautical kitchen towel
I love the way his home is filled with nautical details. A blue sailor knot towel...

nautical Wedgwood plates
... nautical-themed Wedgwood plates...

... and a variety of nautical rope desgins, such as two sailor knot boards on each side of the window, a giant Fishing Glass Float with netting by the stairway which sports a railing made from rope. Not to forget the upholstery on the chair, also a rope design.

And I could live happily in the pool house of this Southampton home! The vintage Signal Flags are a great touch, found on eBay. To see more of this home, take the full tour at Elle Decor.

Movies: Ships Lost at Sea

Three ships lost at sea..., and their stories live on in books, movies, our minds and hearts..., and you've probably seen them all, except maybe number 2 ...

Andrea Gail: The Perfect Storm (2000)

... a sword fishing boat out at sea with six men when a storm stronger than any in recorded history hit the coast off Gloucester, Massachusetts on October 30, 1991.

The movie The Perfect Storm, based on Sebastian Junger's best-selling novel, so called because it was three storms combined into one, creating waves the size of a ten-story building.

Andrea Doria: Ghost Ship (2002)

... an Italian Luxury Cruise Liner that collided with another ship at sea and sank off Cape Code, MA, five years after her launch in 1951. 1,662 passengers and crew were on board, 52 lives were lost. Since then 14 divers died in the attempt of reaching the ship which is lying at 250 feet in international waters, referred to as the Mount Everest of diving.

The movie Ghost Ship is based on a screenplay and tells the fictional story of a salvage group that tries to claim the ship and bring it to a port..., and as the title suggests, there will be ghosts...

The ill-fated Andrea Doria at sea...

... and below a poster.

Titanic: Titanic (1997)

... the most famous, legendary and tragic of them all. On April 14th 1912 on her maiden voyage from Southampton England to New York...

... the luxurious passenger cruise liner hit an iceberg and sank in less than 3 hours. 1,500 people lost their lives. It was Murphy's Law in action (anything that could go wrong did). For example, the iceberg was spotted too late, normally Icebergs did not float that far South and the ship hit it the way it was most vulnerable to her. Then, there weren't enough lifeboats for everybody and a delay in setting them up, two were even lost to the sea, plus the nearest ship operator was asleep..., you can visit this Squidoo lense Best Titanic Ever for all the details.

... and below my poster picks..., as you can imagine there are many more...

The Hots for Beach Huts

Beach HutThe British love their Beach Huts and there are around 20,000 of them dotting the coastline, but this nowhere near satisfies demand, and prices have escalated to silly heights (Guardian).

Beach Huts
While the huts began life during the Victorian era as a place for bathers to change into their stripey swimsuits, they are now a national treasure and considered real estate. Most of the beach huts are just for shelter and storing your Beach Gear.

But some larger "residential huts" can be found in certain locations. There owners are allowed to stay overnight between February and October.

Beach Hut Interior
"Beach huts are small but for a lot of us they're the nearest thing we get to second homes", says an owner in a recent interview with the Independent.

And the cost? Like with any real estate, it depends on location. In hot spots like Mudeford, Dorset pre-recession hut prices hit £150,000 for the sleep in versions.

The cover shot alone makes me want to get this book for my coffee table.

And if you want to learn more about the history, then this is the book you want to read.

My Orange Room

I love my orange room..., but there is nothing beachy or nautical about it, except...

... that the color was inspired by this Quahog shell. Oddly though, both my husband and I call it the pumpkin room, go figure.

Turn left and there is a window with a view over the Sakonnet ocean inlet, officially named Sakonnet River.

It's a bonus room that we furnished with a twin bed...

... and two items dear to my husband, one of his licensed chairs and a chalk drawing by an artist he once knew.

*A thought about sea creatures from Coastal Living:
"Whole shells sold in souvenir shops are often dredged from the ocean floor, then killed and bleached"..., this I suppose could be true for online stores too. Click on link if you want to know more about how to protect sea creatures and their natural habitats.
