An Island Cottage off the Grid

I'm officially on board as a monthly reviewer of Coastal Living Magazine (see September Review) and we thoroughly enjoyed reading it last weekend -yep, my husband is into it too! For the October Issue I decided to focus on one story only. Not for lack of captivating stories (there's a wonderful spread of Coastal Living's Idea Cottage in SC, and a FL condo makeover by the fabulous Phoebe Howard), but because I fell head over heels in love with the Island Cottage of the cover story.

Situated on Esther island off Nantucket, the cottage is built in 2007 and powered by sun and wind only, meaning it's totally off the grid!

Realtors say kitchen and bathrooms sell houses, but this fireplace would sell it for me. It's made by a local craftsman with river rocks and Beach Rocks, and the mantel is a one-of-a-kind piece of Driftwood washed up nearby.

The bow-beamed ceiling is designed to look like a whaling boat's hull, reflecting Esther's history as a whaling island.

The house incorporates bits of the old ramshackle cottage that sat on the property, such as wood studs and the weathered shingles that line the covered porch.

White painted beaded-board walls for a timeless New England feel.

And gorgeous farmed-mahogany floors throughout.

The article shows how the house's power system works, part of it being energy saving choices. The question is: Would you ditch your vacuum for a broom?

Visit Simone @ Beach Vintage who's also on board as a reviewer, featuring her favorite article, which happens to be this cottage too! And there's another review over @ Coastal Nest and The Lettered Cottage.

I meant my "first comment". It dissapeared right after I wrote it.

Wow it's totally gorgeous - not at all what I expect an off the grid house to look like. I'd totally ditch my vaccuum to live there!

congrats dear maya on becoming a reviewer. It seems like a natural role for you. Love this and how it seems to bring nature in. I have always wanted a bed right next to a window and with that view, awesome. can't really do that here in cali with our earthquakes, but at least we do have the views. have a great day.

I loved that place also! The other houses featured in the magazine this month, not so much. A little too contemporary for my taste. But that cottage near Nantucket is so beautiful! Love that fireplace!

Oh yes, what a great unique fireplace! The whole cottage is just lovely and open and inviting. But that fireplace, yeah, that would sell me to that house right there!
