A Southern Home Showcases Oyster Crafts & more

oyster mirror
Hey y'all! I'm Amanda from Dixie Delights and I'm just *delighted* to be guest posting over here at Completely Coastal!

I hail from the so-Southern coastal charmer of Savannah, Georgia. And, growing up on the river and just a stone's throw from the beach, the scenes and scents and of the coast are very much a part of who I am. I never would have imagined (and still wake up surprised some days) that I'd one day make my own home in the land locked city of Atlanta with an amazing husband (that we call Honey) and two precious boys. Starting with a color palette reminiscent of the marsh and ocean, I've set to work on subtly adding coastal inspired accents throughout our home. Come on in...

A DIY oyster shell frame on the Foyer Table. See how here!

Southern home decor
Signed prints from my favorite coastal artist and one-time Savannahian, Ray Ellis, in the den, breakfast room and living room.

shell cluster
A found cluster of shells resting on the living room coffee table.

oyster shells in bowl
A bowl of found oyster shells on the sideboard in the dining room...,

oyster shell candle holder
... and oyster shell votive holders on the table.

See DIY Oyster Shell Candle Holder or buy here.

coral throw
A coral throw on the sofa in the den.

oyster shell mirror in bedroom
Our not so subtly coastal inspired master bedroom. Oyster shell mirror from Wisteria (if only I'd know about Completely Coastal's Oyster Shell Mirror Tutorial then!) and prints and shells from Ballard Designs (about 4 years ago).

lantern with oyster shells
A DIY copy of Wisteria's Oyster Shell Lantern in the guest suite. See how here!

coral vanity curtain
And a coastal chic (on a dime) bathroom makeover in our newly remodeled basement.

coral shower curtain
I've feathered our nest with these coastal inspired things, some found, some purchased and some made, all reminders of where I came from and a place I love so much! Thanks for taking this little tour with me and pop over to visit at Dixie Delights any time y'all want!

Thank you so much Amanda for giving us a tour of your beautiful Southern Home! I really want to find oyster shells now -lots of them! And your "on a dime" bathroom is definitley very chic!

Large Drift Wood Wall Art -Go Collage or Abstract

drift wood wall art collage
I am so in love with this drift wood wall art piece! Taryn of Design, Dining and Diapers says, "This was one of the very first pieces of handmade artwork in the cabin. My grandma’s friend collected pieces of driftwood off the beach and turned them into an intricate collage that sits above the fireplace." And there's more driftwood art in her grandparent's Whidbey Island beach cabin. Click link to see! Also, to view this even larger go to my Facebook Page. Taryn was so kind to email me a large file!

wood wall art
Then on Apartment Therapy I saw this bold drift wood wall art installation done with two driftwood pieces. And how about filling a non functional fireplace with shells -love that!

abstract wood wall art
Beautiful too! You can create abstract wood wall art with driftwood planks. Seen at Decor Pad.

Or simply look for a large single piece of drift wood for instant wall art! Spotted on Pure Style Home.

Coastal Mix Fall Decorating Ideas & DIY Pumpkins

Fall decorating with leaves
As of today, Fall season is official here in the Northern Hemisphere! To celebrate I've rounded up all kinds of Fall decorating ideas -including making and decorating pumpkins! I'm still savoring the warm temps though, but I know for some of you Fall couldn't come soon enough..., so let's see what I found, beginning with Joy's Fall Decorating idea of simply adding leaves. You can buy faux leaves or wait for the real ones to Fall on your lawn -that's what I do! Last year I used leaves for a Centerpiece. And not to forget my Fall Decorating with Pressed Leaves -coastal style!

white fabric pumpkin with shell
And I found the cutest DIY Fabric Pumpkin topped with a shell at The Charm of Home.

leaf wreath with starfish
You only need one single starfish to beachify a Fall wreath! Seen at French Country Cottage.

coastal dried floral design
This dried floral design sold at Outer Banks Trading Group fits right into the Fall decorating theme. I'd love to see this idea done with a driftwood piece. If you're a regular, then you know how much I love Driftwood!

decorating with white pumpkins
Lofts of people seem to favor white pumpkins this year. Aren't they just perfect for a light and bright beach style home, like Kristy's Starfish Cottage in Florida!

fabric pumpkin
Then, a superb fabric pumpkin that smells of lavender! Rosemary calls her creations Sea Lavender Pumpkins, using hand dyed silk velvet in shades of the sea along with silk ribbons and lace, filling them with dried lavender buds. And this one has a driftwood stem too!

Fall cloche
A beautiful Fall Cloche. See, one starfish suffice.

decorating pumpkin with wave pattern
I adore this! Decorating a Pumpkin in a wave pattern with upholstery tacks. No carving or painting. How to? Make a wave stencil out of kraft paper, attach it to the pumpkin with pins, trace the design around the entire pumpkin, then fill the lines with basic black upholstery tacks. Would look awesome on a white pumpkin too!

painted shell with pumpkin
I went beachcombing in the archives..., and still love this fun Pumpkin Shell from 1022 Seashell Ave.

Fall grapevine wreath
I think grapevine wreaths are the best wreaths to use throughout the year and switch out decor for different seasons. You simply attach things with thin wire. For Fall decorating, arrange leaves, then tuck in a few shells. This Fall Wreath is sold on Etsy by Beachy Wreaths.

Fall mantel
And lastly, thoughts on Fall decorating from designer Jennifer of Gracious Spaces who posted this on her Facebook page:

How do you introduce the fall season into a beachy room? That question has been on my mind as fall approaches. My kitchen & den are easily changed with the seasons but my living room is filled with whites, blues, & browns along with beachy decor. I decided to make a few changes to the mantle only & keep everything else with the same.

If you struggle with the same question then consider using silver, gold, burlap, pinecones, acorns, faux fruit, or earthy natural tones as accents. You don't have to decorate with bright orange & red if those colors don't work with your decor. No one will send the decorating police after you (well, probably not).

I added a couple silver pumpkins (40% off at Michaels - about $3.50 total), a little burlap, & an old white berry wreath that I added some orange berries to from last year. I weaved these items into my beachy creamware display for a little fall touch.

Thanks Jennifer for sharing!

And one more thing. Have fun with food!! "And in the autumn, I would make spice cakes in little ramekins..." This is Lili of Fearless Nesting speaking. You might want to revisit Sea Inspired Baking!

Happy Weekend, Everyone!

Dolphin Tale Movie -The Story of Winter

dolphin tale movie
By now you've probably heard of Winter...,

dolphin and prosthetic tale
... the dolphin who lost her tale.

I learned about her only a few weeks ago when Ollie of Sea Life Store contacted me, introducing marine life artist Donjo to me. Inspired by Winter's Story Donjo created a 10' statue of Winter and made a Dolphin Tale Movie Collection, which is represented by Sea Life Store.

Harry Connick and Morgan Freeman in Dolphin Tale
The movie Dolphin Tale tells the story of Winter who lost her tail in a fishing trap off the coast of Florida at the age of three months. Sadly, Dolphins usually don't survive these accidents, but Winter did and was nursed back to health at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium where she now lives with a prosthetic tail. Dolphin Tale movie comes to the theaters tomorrow, starring Kris Kosterfferson, Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick, Jr...

Ashley Judd in Dolphin Tale
... Ashley Judd...,

winter in aquarium
... and Winter playing herself. Has anybody seen Winter at the Aquarium? I bet many more people will flock to Clearwater very soon!

My Round Shell Mirror -A Simple Tutorial

round shell mirror
I finally made a round shell mirror with all the shells I found last year! You might recall -the ones with the natural holes in them I strung into a Shell Garland.

shell mirror tutorial
I started with the layout to determine the size of the shell mirror. The design is simple. Two circles, one on top of the other.

mirror tutorial
Handy husband cut out a wood circle...

round mirror on wood
... as well as a round mirror from a sheet of faux glass that he brougt home from work. So this mirror was a freeby! I used wood glue and hot glue to adhere the mirror.

mirror hanging hardware
A look at the backside (ugly, I know). I drilled a hole first -not a stable hanging solution! So I looked around in the basement, opening endless little drawers, and found the perfect hardware. The nails were too long, so I hit them sideways.

shells glued on mirror
I used hot glue, which is fast and fun to work with. But I had forgotten that it creates these fine glue threads that go everywhere if you're not careful.

glued shells on mirror
You can (barley) see that I covered the edge of the wood frame with sand. Not liking it. I will look for some nice rope to give the shell mirror a more refined finish -because it's worth it!

shell mirror on wall
It looks quite elegant in fact..., and we both love it. What's your latest project?
