A ship's figurehead is the carved wooden figure traditionally mounted on the prow of early sailing ships. It gave a ship unique character and was believed to sooth the sea gods and make sure the voyage will be safe.

And here's a beautiful bow maiden mounted on the side of a house that I discovered at The Lennoxx.
And just in case you're now eager to find the perfect bow maiden for your home, I looked around and found some at Ebay here: Ship Figureheads

OK seriously I love this idea. I'm jealous that I never thought of it on my own ;)
I ran across a couple in a local shop the other day. Distressed, cracked, & looked very authentic, but I suspect they were new made of old materials. Very tempting. Especially the mermaid :-)

They are just so Majestic looking!!! xoxo~Kathy @ Sweet Up-North Mornings...
Beautiful! I want one!
Oh I don't know. The neighbors may think I'm crazier than I already am:)
I would have to get one that is fully clothed or I would hear it from the neighbors LOL!
I have alway found these fascinating.

Hmm. Wonder how one would look in the garden?

very cool! just a great idea for the sea lovers we are :)
I wish I could see a fair maiden attached to a house here. I love the idea. But since I don't live anywhere near the sea and my house really does not look like a beach house, I doubt whether it would work. One can dream though?
I just discovered your blog and love it. (I love in South West Florida.) I signed up to follow you and would love for you to come for a visit and do the same.
Thanks for the inspirations.

The ship's figureheads are beautiful! I love seeing them and learning about their history. The Index of American Design has some more great photos at http://xroads.virginia.edu/~ma01/Davis/ships/home.html
