A Beachcomber's Odyssey by Deacon Ritterbush

A Beachcomber's Odyssey
"I never thought of the sand as a place to find antiques, learn about geology, or see living history —until I scoured a beach with Deacon Ritterbush, aka Dr. Beachcomb", from Chesapeake Life Mag.

Deacon RitterbushAuthor Deacon Ritterbush is a writer, anthropologist and political economist who's beachcombing experience spans five decades and stretches from Chesapeake Bay to Europe, the Caribbean, Hawaii and the South Pacific; here she is in her home studio in Annapolis, MD, holding up some Fishing Glass Floats that she found on one of her beachcombing expeditions. You can read more about Deacon @ Dr. Beachcomb.

BeachcombersThe book is full with photographs of all the treasures Ritterbush has acquired such as sea glass, fossils, shells, pottery shards, driftwood, fishing floats and more. It offers practical advice for beachcombers, explores different regions of the world, and talks about a variety of physical environments and cultures.

BeachcombingThis for example is an Angel Wing shell found on a beach in St. Mary's County, Maryland resting on sea sponges from the British Virgin Islands. You can see more pictures from the book here, and to read a sample chapter click here.

The Beach House by Jane Green

The Beach House @ Barnes and Nobles

After showing the before and after of Jane Green's Seaside Cottage @ A Beach Lovers Place, I wanted to give you an insider's look into her book The Beach House, set on Nantucket, by artist and writer Sarah Laurence who read the book while summering on the island.

The story in a nutshell: Nan Powell, a sixty-five-year-old widow turns her beloved Nantucket home on the bluff into a summer boardinghouse to make ends meet. People start moving in, and an unexpected visitor turns all their lives upside down.

"I set out to Siasconset (called ‘Sconset) in search of Green’s inspiration. The old fishing village is indeed a charming setting." Sarah writes. Then she headed to the bluff where the larger houses were built for summer people, trying to find Nan Powell's boardinghouse.

"The bluff-top homes have stairs leading down to the beach, which wraps for miles around the island. Off season I’ve seen whales passing by. It was tempting to take a dip, but I wanted to find the house. There was one old, dilapidated Victorian that could have been the model for Windermere."

"Windermere is meant to be 1920’s, and this venerable lady looks more late Victorian. It’s also not set on an improbable nine acres. Still this house was the one I pictured while reading The Beach House."

Sarah concludes, "Green succeeded in making this novel ring true to a summer native. The fact that she is English and now lives in Connecticut makes this feat doubly impressive. I noted very few inaccuracies. The most amusing one was a ringing cell phone. I’ve never managed to get reception on Siasconset although the rest of the island is fine. I rather like that sense of remote isolation."

Tobi Fairley -Tips for Hanging Art

tips for hanging art
"The bold use of color and pattern that I incorporate in my designs is the hallmark of my signature style." says Tobi Fairley in an interview with Traditional Home which selected her as one of the Top 20 Young Designers in America. And bold Tobi Fairley is when it comes to Hanging Art.

Tobi Fairley Home
I love this grouping she did in her own den. "In my den, I hung a collection of like pieces over my sofa with absolutely no space between the frames, they are literally touching each other."
Her tip:
"When hanging art over furniture, keep them close together. The art should relate to the furniture as if they are a cohesive unit or vignette."

Tobi Fairley Bathroom
And she definitely surprised me with that last row. "In this bathroom, I used a collection of art to simulate wallpaper…but the good news is you can take it with you if you go!"
Her tip:
"When hanging a series, think of the grouping as one large piece."

Tobi Fairley Hanging Art
"And on the bedroom wall, I framed this collection with plaster paneling to create a focal point."
Her tip:
"When deciding on whether to select and hang a vertical piece or grouping or a horizontal piece or grouping, think of it like stripes in wallcoverings or textiles. A vertical stripe is more formal, traditional and raises your eye level making a space feel taller. A horizontal stripe feels more casual, contemporary and expands the width of the space."

Barry Dixon Design
And even Tobi Fairley says that there are no rules when it comes to hanging art. "As is evident in a very interesting corner display from designer Barry Dixon, there really are no rules." Check out this post on the subject: Arranging Pictures -Are you Following the Rules?

For more tips about hanging art check out Tobi Fairley's article @ ay Magazine.

Tobi Fairley comes from a formal design education and studied the history of design and architecture in depth. Two of the modern day designers that she admires are Jamie Drake and her friend Amanda Nisbet who both share her love of color.
