Clooney won a Golden Globe for his performance as Matt King, a wealthy attorney who with his cousins inherited vast acres of land in Hawaii from ancestors (hence the name The Descendants). The story is based on the best-selling novel by Hawaii writer Kaui Hart Hemmings. It's a family drama with no happy ending (I hear). After King's wife is severely injured in a boating accident and in comatose condition, he finds out that she had been having an affair.
King also tries to reconnect with and take care of his two daughters in his wife’s absence. In the film his home is in Nuuanu, a 15-minute car ride from Waikiki.

Here's the scene where King arrives at his best friends house, after running down the hill from his home. Director Alexander Payne supposedly worked hard to get the homeowner, Tiare Finney, to rent her historic colonial-revival house for filming. At the end it all worked out, Finney even got a small part as one of King’s cousins, Connie..., so did her goat, playing himself. See him standing in the yard?
For the filming nothing in the interiors was changed. You see tropical art, eclectic memorabilia, and there's a surfboard in the corner too.

Part of the storyline involves King, and his daughters, traveling from Honolulu to Hanalei Bay on Kauai to find his wife’s lover. I think that's the funny part!

King tracks down the lover...

...vacationing in a cottage on Nalu Beach. The cottage used in the scene is part of an estate at Kauiokalani on Hanalei Bay. The main house as well as several cottages can be rented.

Here's a peek inside one of the cottages via Hanalei Land Company.

This is not the first time beautiful Hanalei Bay is featured in a movie. Mostly though it is used as a stand-in for someplace else. Not in this movie!
"And in the evening, sometimes they would light up the street with their huge movie lights", says Rose who lives in the area, see The Descendants in Hawaii.

This picture from a scene on the beach made me wonder about the fog. So here's a little weather trivia as discussed on my Facebook Page. It gets very foggy there... and it's actually called "vog"....volcanic smog. It's the ashes from the active volcanoes mixing with smog.

And another stunning scenery! This is the huge tract of land the King family supposedly owned. It’s an actual private ranch on Kauai’s southeast shore, adjacent to the Huleia National Wildlife Refuge. You can read all about here: Where was George Clooney's Kauai Ranch in The Descendants.

Sounds like a great movie and I can't wait to see all those interiors!
Mahalo! I saw it and it was really good. I reviewed it on my little blog here :http://sealaura.blogspot.com/2011/12/movie-review-descendants.html
Anyway, it's a really good story and I just love the relaxed feel of the island. Kauai is definitely a gorgeous place since it is not as populated, it definitely earns it's name as The Garden Island.
I can't wait to see the movie either, it looks so good and so beautiful. Thanks for sharing these.

Yes, it's in my Netflix queue, and I've been very patient in waiting for it to come out. I didn't know it was filmed in Hawaii - bonus! :D
Ok, I'll take all three...Hawaii, beautifull houses and George Clooney. This sounds like a great movie and one I would enjoy seeing. I don't keep up with a lot of movies so thanks for the review and thanks for stopping by my site earlier.
George Clooney one super good looking man
I heard it was a great movie, I'd love to see it! If nothing else, you get to stare at George Clooney the entire time. That man just gets better looking as time goes by. :)
I haven't seen that movie but I agree with Anita above that George Clooney gets better looking as time goes by! He actually looked a little goofy in his "Facts of Life" days but now...Wow! Kauai is just gorgeous! We spent part of our honeymoon at the Princeville and it was spectacular! Have a great weekend!

Haven't seen it but can't wait now! Thanks for sharing!
I am going to see the movie Descendant this weekend at a "fork and a movie" theatre in New Jersey, which is you have dinner while you watch a movie. It should be fun, I've never been to a fork and a movie before. And as for George Clooney, he most definitely gets better looking as he gets older. Thanks for the movie review…
Have a wonderful weekend!

I loved it!! Although it was sad, the scenery was gorgeous (and the main character ;) ) and I thought it left you with a nice message
It was a well-done movie - love learning more about it from your pictures and posts!
Enjoy it (bring tissues for the tears)

Really enjoyed this post - learned some new things about the movie! I got to see it last week, and I like the story a lot. One of those funny/sad types. Also, it was great to recognize places that we know! Thanks so much for the mention!
Thanks for sharing Maya, that looks like a fun movie! ~Lili
I need to see this one. I've even been considering the book.
