According to the American Film Institute Some Like It Hot is the number one rated comedy film of all time! Starring the unforgettable Marilyn Monroe.

And the grand Hotel del Coronado, aka Hotel Del, in San Diego where all the external scenes were shot.

And I think it is also the first Hollywood movie to show men in drag, with Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis playing two musicians who after witnessing a mob massacre disguised themselves as female musicians..., both falling for the sexy singer in the band (Marilyn Monroe).
Then...

... as said, the other star in the film, the Hotel del Coronado which opened in 1888 and completed a $150 million renovation in December 2007, which added cottages, a spa, restaurants, and shops.
And I bet most of you know that the Del is also known as one of America's most haunted Resorts. As the story goes, a young woman named Kate Morgan checked into the hotel in 1892 to meet her estranged husband. He never showed up,and days later she was found dead on the beach from a gunshot wound. It is believed that she still haunts the hotel. Take a tour of the Del Coronado Hotel with Rainey of The Project Table who stayed there last December, celebrating her 29th anniversary with her husband.

The Coronado Hotel at Christmas -in December the lights will go on again! 60,000 bulbs will illuminate every facet of the Victorian resort..., with one towering 30-foot pine tree standing outside...

... and a second Christmas Tree inside gracing the foyer, photographed by Rainey.

OOooo I want to go there.
BTW, that movie is so funny!
Maya, what a great post! That hotel is gorgeous-love the photo with the Christmas lights!!
I love that Hotel! It must be nice there year round!
Great post Maya..... "back in the day" 1966 to be exact, we had our High School Senior Dinner at the Hotel Del but I never got a chance to take a ghost tour then.
What a great post! Marilyn Monroe was just so beautiful and I have only seen parts of Some Like It Hot, but enjoyed what I saw! I have heard of the Del being haunted, romantically tragic. The tour would be very cool! The Del looks really pretty for the holidays!
Wow, that's something you don't see everyday. That hotel looks incredible. I'd love to visit one day. Love all the photos of Marilyn. She always reminds me of my Nana as she was a huge fan. I always thought it was funny this old person loving someone so young but then I realised she was young once. I also love that cane chair in third shot. Amazing. Pruxxx
I've always thought this was one of the most gorgeous hotels ever. It is on my "to do" list!
I wanted to get married there!!! Marilyn Monroe is so beautiful. I'd love to have seen what a beauty she would have been if she were alive today.
Some Like It Hot is one of my all-time favorites. I'm so glad to see you featured it and the gorgeous (and haunted) hotel. This makes me want to watch the movie again. Jack Lemmon was actually one of my mother's cousins, but we never met him.
P.S. Nice of you to link to my Marilyn post, Maya! :)
What a delightful post - was great to see the old photos and the beautiful hotel. Makes me want to visit there!

I've seen parts of Some Like It Hot here and there, but I really should sit down and watch the whole movie at once! And I'll be sure to watch out for the beautiful Hotel del Coronado. Love the picture of it at Christmas - that huge tree is really impressive!

love it! Marilyn is my absolute favorite - think that I have probably watched this movie at least 10 times, and always see something new and marvel at Marilyn's natural beauty and sexiness.
Great shots. Love the Hotel del. Been the many times. The new cottages are spectactular.
Why can't bathing suits still look like that? My self esteem is shattered just walking into a swimsuit store.
That was a great movie! I didn't realize where it was filmed, what a spectacular place! ~Lili
