First worn by French sailors, the Breton style blue-and-white striped sailor shirt was introduced to the fashion world in 1917 by Coco Chanel and has been in style ever since -I've always had one in my wardrobe!
The look is linked to Brittany and the Atlantic coast in the western part of France, to idyllic summer vacations by the sea, and has become very trendy here in the United States since the release of the movie Coco Before Chanel (2009), starring Audrey Tautou wearing the French sailor shirt not only in the film, but also on the film poster.

cute cute cute! Wish I could wear stripes
It's a classic. I look forward to wearing each spring and all through summer.
Oh I love this shirt - I even have one that I love to wear when at the beach! Thanks for making me feel that I actually DO have some fashion sense!! (sometimes I wonder!)

I love this type of shirt! I was in a J. Crew the other day and walked straight over to one similar to these! I consider 'over $100' out of my price range but it caught my eye! Love your photos! ♥
oooooo I want I want!
Mr. Whimsy and I are going to spend a week in Folly Beach, SC this December. I should definitely make sure I have one of these tops!
Thanks so much for the collage! Lovely. I can't remember who, probably Heidi, but someone was wearing this shirt on Project Runway this year and I remember thinking, what a classic look. Also, thanks for reminding me to watch Coco Before Chanel again. It was a beautiful film.
Such a classic look. Enjoyed that mosaic Maya! ~Lili
Hi. Thanks for visiting my blog. We went to Newport, but it was a Saturday with a boat show . . had no idea that it would be sooo busy. We drove around for an hour and every parking lot and spot was full. We parked at the Breakers and walked around and then headed to Sandwich and Yarmouthport, which we loved!
Thanks for the history of the striped sailor shirt, and I'll definitely check out the glass floats 101; as we inherited 3 from my husband's dad's estate.

Lovely tribute to the stripes!! Hope all's well with you!!
I saw the film, that woman was a genius. And yeah, I now possess at least a few striped shirts:)
Love these...have been owned by a couple in my life!
Love the stripes:):)
I used to have one of these french inspired shirts many years ago when I still sailed regularly. We watched Coco Before Chanel over the summer, and loved it!

Oh my gosh, I LOVE the striped shirt! I've always adored Brigitte Bardot, and especially the pic you included in your collage. I have a striped sweater and just acquired a striped t-shirt, it's fast becoming my favorite! Great post!!

LOL! We wore those shirts while on a Windjammer cruise 15 years ago! Nobody was allowed to wear them (except for crew members) til the last day we sailed. Then everyone on the entire ship had them on. It was so much fun! :)

Always love that style! Great mosaic to see so many stylish folks wearing it!
Too cute! I love stripes! Fun mosaic!
Quite a classic shirt. Great idea for a mosiac.
Love your mosaic! I personally try to avoid horizontal stripes :-)
What an interesting mosaic. My favorite design for summer too.

Cool mosaic! I have never dared to wear stripes, but it sure is a classic look.
Neat idea for a mosaic. Love the shirts.
Grat Idea and one of the best I have come too. Love your mosaic
Didn't know the history. Well done! Cathy
I love anything coastal, beachy or sea like...these shirts are precious. Great mosaic.
Such a classic! Nice to see Jackie O there. She was THE style icon of my youth. I saw her once in the supermarket, believe it or not. :) thanks for sharing at MM. :)
Jackie O wore it best, I think. I've always loved this shirt, but honestly, I thought it was a Danish sailor's shirt!
