When I saw this super cute wood buoy craft last Friday on Simple Daisy it was love at first sight. Heather (also see here: Beach Party Crafts) whipped these up with some lumber she had sitting in the basement. "Just get some 4x4's and cut them to whatever sizes you like....nip off the tops and drill a hole for the rope. Paint them and then scuff um all up!" No problem -we had the wood, and our basement is my husband's workshop with all kinds of power tools, including a table and a chop saw.

The 4x4's we used are cherry wood and had a previous life as bed legs, not very tall, but it worked out. And now I can't decide whether I want to paint my wood buoys or leave them the way they are! The wood is really nice and I do think that they look charming natural, but just not that "buoyishy".
So what do YOU think?
Update:
Thank you ALL so much for your Input! I will go ahead and white wash the buoys, then paint one horizontal stripe on each.

Okay, I'm somewhere in between. I love Heather's colors and yet your smaller versions in cherry allow you to appreciate the fine cherry wood.
Maybe one painted stripe in navy or wrap some twine around instead. At least the twine is an easy fix if you don't like it.
I never thought of that, Rita! I like the idea of just one painted stripe -having both, so to speak!
I LOVE these too!!! This was such a great project. I love the cherry but I love painted. I do like the idea that Rita had too, you get the best of both!
I like them plain. They're beautiful by the way.
simpledaisy made it ound so easy right? she is so crafty I love it. I do love the colored ones like Heather's but that wood sure is pretty. Rita's idea sounds like a good compromise.
Pickled? You would get a more driftwoody, used look, but still see the wood. I love their simple buoyish charm.
I do love the wood, but Heather's look so beachy! She is one talented gal. I love the recipes she posts!
I say, go for the paint.
Until I read Tricia's post I was on the fence. Whitewashed & distressed... yes!
Very cute. I would definitely paint them!
Personally, I'd paint them. :) They look great! I love this idea.
I'm not usually a get it painted girl. But this time I am!
Brenda
i vote whitewashed and distressed
I vote whitewashed and distressed too:)I do like the color of the wood...so it would be pretty to have it show through the whitewashing!!!!
I am going to make more....I have a friend who lives on the lake and I thought about making hers in more nautical colors of red white and blue!!!!
You could always do that too:)
Are you going to actually use them as buoys? Anyway, I like them natural unless you are going to throw them in the water then I think you should paint them.
Love them! Great idea!
I wanted to suggest something different but along the same lines of what everyone has said. Paint one with two lines in white, leaving the top and the middle paint-free. Paint the other one with just one line in the middle, and leave one as-is... and then distress them all by banging on a local rock and giving it a go with sand-paper.
Who says you can't have them every way?
Paint! Great find.
I vote with Simple Daisy, white washed and them some color. Will be such pretty nautical accents to put on your deck or dock..
PS The watermelon margaritas were fabulous!
Oh Maya, I got over here a little late, but if you want to naturally distress them, just paint them up and toss them in the saltwater for a few months! Great job on them! The ones everyone uses around here anymore are just foam. The wooden ones are so much more beautiful! ~Lili
