Mixing Sea Shell Patterns and Prints

Sea Shell Patterns
Pattern Play, an article in this month Redbook Magazine that includes this wonderful example of mixing sea shell patterns and prints. In the article it says, start with a large, patterned piece, like the densely patterned Wool Hooked Rug by Dash and Albert, then pull the colors from the rug to use in pillows and accessories throughout the room.

Seashells Rug
A smaller 3x5 version of this rug is available at Seaside Inspired.

Crab Pillow Starfish Pillow

Crab pillow and starfish pillow are sold by Outer Banks Trading Group.

Shell Shadow Box
Then Shell Shadow Boxes from Wisteria were used to play off the shell pattern in the rug and add interest to the wall. A little lesson learned!

Would it be possible to include some more reasonably-priced versions of the items as well? I know not everyone lives near the beach and can collect shells, but $148 for shells glued in a shadow box? $158 for one pillow? That's just a ridiculous waste.

Your beach decor makes me drool. So inspiring.

Meg, you can order shells online for pretty cheap. I know Michaels craft stores have bags of mixed shells if you have one in your area.

I totally understand! These products just were the ones used and that's all I wanted to feature here. But there certainly are much less expensive pillows with similar patterns (browse category pillows), and I'm planning a future post on how to make seashell shadow boxes!

I love the aqua background color in the rug with all that white in the room. So coastal and calming! Beautiful decor. ~Lili

Maya, thanks for sharing your Ikea island with me. I can see why so many people shop there. Your kitchen turned out so gorgeous!

Love the PB post below too, fun to see all the shells, which I love too. I made a cute shell box myself & it was really easy.

Oh Maya, I do love you and your coastal beachy finds!! I love the shadow boxes - this project is on my to-do-list - And I adore the crab pillow.

In regards to prices, maybe Meg could search places like Etsy as there are many many talented people selling their similar handmade wares at a fraction of the cost, or just take some inspiration from all your wonderful posts and try making your own?

Great ideas. I love the shells in the shadow boxes. We display ours in apothecary jars. But I think I'm going to take some of our favorites out and make them myself. Thanks!

I'm loving that rug! Would fit in perfectly with all the shells around my home.

Yes, the shadow boxes are easy to make, I have several and another one in the making!
