Made From Used Sails -Two Artisan Giveaways!

Sail
Buy at Art.com

I hope you all had a good start to the New Year! I'm thrilled to have two giveaways for my first post, and products that are not only recycled but also handmade in the U.S.

Sails that are no longer used to travel the seas usually end up in a landfill, but many are being given a second life, and rightfully so.

Recycled Sails
"They're fine textiles with incredible handwork, just like quilts. Every sail has a story to tell, from each stitch sewn by its creator to the incredible journey traveled." Says designer Cheryl Hackett-Galvin in an interview with Coastal Living.

There is a number of artisans who recycle old sails and transform them into beautiful home decor accessories and other products. While the main focus of Seabags (ME), 44 Knots (CA) and Ella Vickers (NC) is bags, Reiter8 (NY) also offers pillows, stockings and wallets.

Sailcloth Wine Bag
And Jenny and Terri Doane from Second Wind Sails (MA) seem to have it all! They create all kinds of fashionable bags and totes, nautical pillows, shower curtains, stockings, and these adorable and very popular wine bags, which brings me to our first giveaway: A handmade wine bag of your choice, offered by Second Wind Sails!

Handmade Sail Pillow
The second giveaway is sponsored by artisan Kimberly Knoess from Pink Oyster Designs. Kim, a transplanted Southern Belle who is living in the Boston area, not too far from where I live, makes neat wine bags also, chic pet carriers and these fabulous nautical pillows that are available with one letter or one number in either blue or red, and she's giving one pillow away!

Note:
If you wanted a pair, so you could spell out your initials or the state you live in, or your favorite number has two digits, think of it this way -you'd be buying two handmade sailcloth pillows for only $30!

See All Pillows.

To Enter the Giveaways:

Simply leave a comment and tell us what you would like to win!

And if you spread the word and blog about these wonderful Eco friendly products (and link to this post), leave a second comment, and you'll be entered twice! Feel free to grab this giveaway button. Thanks!

made from used sails

Entries will be accepted until midnight EST on Sunday, Jan 10th. The two winners will be announced on Tuesday.

Rules:

You must have a U.S. shipping address.

I need to find your email address either on your profile page or blog, or if you don't have a blog, then you must leave your email so I can contact you if you win. You will have 24 hours to respond or I will choose a new winner.

Best of Luck!

Used Sails
And in case you where thinking of making something yourself from genuine sailcloth, and were wondering where to find old sails, try marine consignment stores, contact sail makers, or post a note on a sailing or yacht club bulletin board. I understand that racing sailors replace their sails every year, sometimes after every regatta! Or search for Used Sails on Ebay.

"Everyone can appreciate the history tied to each sail
and the efforts being taken to reduce unnecessary waste."

I love items made from recycled sails. I own a tote made by Seabags and Christmas stockings and a Christmas tree skirt by Second Winds Sails. You can see my tee skirt on their site. Just click on shower curtains and then click stockings. I designed it and Jenny and Terri made it for me this year. I love it! It suits my house perfectly. Jenny and Terri were fabulous to work with. I highly recommend them! I love the wine bag too. Thanks for all your great ideas and links.

How wonderful to recycle sails. I so love it. You never know when something like that is recycled as to whom it belonged to and what oceans it might have traveled. How fun is this?

I would love a pillow with an "S" on it. Could be for Sherry, could be for Smith. Either way I win. Love it. Thank you so much for the wonderful opportunity to enter this beautiful give away. Add my name to the hat please.

I never win things, but I have to keep hoping I might! My fiance loooooooves sailing, so for a wedding gift I would love to do our initials on a few of these for our bed. Thanks for the chance!

I love them both, but am partial to the pillow. I just discovered your site, but I'm loving it. I'll be back.
