Before + After: My Sweet Coastal Home

Once the dwelling of a family of five, at the end Mr. Robertshaw was the only one left living in this coastal home. This was his chair from which I imagine he enjoyed the water view and some TV watching too. What you can't see in this picture is that the rooms were all wall papered, the paint of the moldings was peeling and the floors were completely worn out.

Now this cozy living space is a mixture of eclectic and somewhat modern, still waiting for the finishing decorative touches such as rugs, pillows and wall decor.

Our realtor during a showing..., this layout is no more.

Where the table once stood a small powder room was built as part of a whole plumbing redo with a new master bath upstairs. And the buffet hutch made room for the fridge. The kitchen is the one remaining project that is still in progress.

Luckily that brown linoleum floor you see lifted up like a charm...

And just like all the other rooms our master bedroom was transformed with buckets of paint and a newly re-finished wood floor.

The exterior was not a pretty picture..., old and torn, nothing could be left untouched, not even the chimney.

Now, I can't take my eyes of this New England beauty! And if you like to view more picture of this coastal home remodel project I have documented the entire process here.

I think my next can of paint for our bedroom will have to be a soft blue like that--it looks beautiful!
haha. I just realized that the thing I commented on was actually about the easiest thing in your entire process, huh? You probably spent ages working on this house to get it the way it is. The biggest projects are ones we can't even see on the surface. I imagine that bathtub is especially nice now.

Maya, what a wonderful house you have found and restored! So beautiful! I live in Portsmouth, RI and remember when the house went on the market and how soon it sold. You've done a wonderful job. I hope you enjoy living in Tiverton. I found your blog because I sell seashell art and was just roaming around the web for ideas. If you would like to consider some shell craft for your home, please check out my site:

I wish you well in your gorgeous new seaside home! Sincerely,

Wow Maya, you have such a beautiful home. I think it's my dream home. You did such a nice job decorating it. You must be an interior designer. I'm just gonna have to keep dreaming!

Hi Maya, from Connecticut. I was up early with the birds....browsing, as I like to do for coastal themed ideas and came across your site/sites. I'm glad I did---I came to your pumpkin colored room and I'm sitting here smiling....in a whole up-stairs redo 4 yrs ago, we painted our master bedroom a color I call cantalope! And it is your color, all over again. We live only 10 miles inland from the central coast in CT--which you know, is hemmed in by Long Island Sound. Some people scoff--that we're not really coastal--but hey, 10 miles is closer than I've ever been! And, I'm beach girl-have been all my life so doubters can go pound sand, as the saying goes! Anyhow, here to tell you I love the quahog color. My inspiration was in a jingle shell. They look like potato chips, and run the gamut of all colors of yellows to coppers to light oranges. With our melon colored room, I have a patchwork quilt with mediterranean blues and greens. White trim in the room, and we put down medium/dark walnut floors. I've hung white battenburg lace valances--sunshine in the morning is too precious to me. I have white washed post-type lamps from Walmart, which were really off-white, but a quick spray paint job that took all of 5 minutes for both, has made them the white I like. I found Laura Ashley blue roses type shades to go on them. They are slightly girly, but what I was going for was really a soft cottagey beach look. Nothing hits you over the head worse, to me, than a house decorated like it is a gift shop gone bad! I have some blue hyrangeas and white peonies in a big white enamel pitcher on a small desk, and yes, they are fake, but they were a budget-friendly find at a thrift shop and where-ever they came from, they must have been quite expensive. My mom smelled the peonies 2 times just to make sure, and last week, my girlfriend did the same thing. I hung two paintings I've done--just tidal/marsh paintings I love to do of the lower CT River. My husband said, "MMMMmmm. Nice; all I need is to hear the sounding buoy...." when I was done with the room. That was all I needed to hear... I have always wanted to live on the ocean,on the beach, and someday, we will--when the twins go off to college....but for now, 10 miles is...10 miles closer! Thank you for the peek into your wonderful home. I savored the railing view with the white lights too, by the way!
Thank you! Deb in CT

Oh my goodness!! It is beautiful!! I LOVE everything about it! The colors are perfect and definitely match my own home palette. We went with Nantucket gray siding for our exterior, but the cream colored cedar shakes are lovely! Now I feel like I should have done that instead! Just beautiful!
